Spotlight Series: Travel Nursing in Oregon

Oregon for Travel Nurses

If Oregon is your destination, you will not regret it. Take a travel nurse job in Oregon, and you’ll be able to spend time enjoying the lovely and diverse vistas of the Pacific Northwest. You’ll also get a chance to explore the quirky culture that makes Oregon such a unique place.

Check out our list of Oregon-centric “must-do’s” and decide which ones appeal the most to you. Then, when you sign on the dotted line for a travel nursing assignment in Oregon, you’ll know exactly how to get started making the most of your time in this beautiful state.

Food and drink

Wine. Chances are, if you tell someone you’re going to visit Oregon on a travel nursing assignment, they’ll advise you to check out Oregon’s wineries. The Willamette Valley is becoming increasingly well-known for its delicious wines. Given that it’s home to 500 (!) wineries and vineyards, you might have to visit more than one time.

Cheese. It makes sense, doesn’t it, that the state that’s known for its exciting wine industry would also be known for cheese? The dairy cooperative that makes Tillamook Cheese is headquartered in Oregon, so you know what to try.

Marionberry pie. Marionberry pie is an Oregon classic, so be sure to try some during your time as a travel nurse in Oregon. If you’ve never heard of the marionberry, think blackberry. Now think of a rich pie filled with these juicy berries. Yep. It’s as good as you’re imagining.

Places to visit

Outdoors enthusiasts, this is the state for you. The key to really experiencing Oregon adventure is getting outside. Beaches, hot springs, mountains, lakes, waterfalls... there’s something for everyone.

Multnomah Falls. This beautiful waterfall and natural area is located in the Columbia River Gorge. One of the most popular outdoor spots in the entire Pacific Northwest, Multnomah Falls draws two million visitors per year. Be one of them.

Crater Lake National Park. The deepest lake in the United States can be found in Crater Lake National Park in the Cascade Mountain Range. Crystal blue water fills a deep indentation that was formed more than 7,000 years ago. If you take a travel nurse job in Oregon during the winter, you can also go skiing or snowshoeing while visiting this park.

Umpqua National Forest. Go camping, hiking and gawking at the trees, lakes and other spectacular scenery in Umpqua National Forest in the Cascade Mountains.

Mount Hood. Skiiers, take notice. Mount Hood is home to 11 glaciers and the only ski resort in North America that’s open year-round. There are plenty of opportunities for hiking and camping, too. Be sure to visit the Mount Hood Cultural Center and Museum while you’re there.

Bend. Visit the town of Bend, Oregon. Ski at Mount Bachelor, go hiking or biking, camp, or just (again) enjoy the high-desert scenery. Or catch an art exhibit, relax at a spa, or enjoy some delicious dining.

Exercise

Have you gotten your fill of ideas for outdoor fun in Oregon? No? Good. Because there are even more must-do opportunities for exercise if you head outside.

Mountain biking. If you love nothing more than taking your bike out on the trail for a few hours, Oregon is the place for you. Some of the best mountain biking trails in the country are located in Oregon--and there are lots and lots of them! There are options for beginners and advanced riders alike, too. (One to consider trying: the Oregon Timber Trail.)

Paddling. Whether you prefer kayaking or whitewater rafting, you’ll be able to enjoy your time on the water. Kayak on one of the coastal waterways or plan a visit to the Bend Whitewater Park, which includes calmer sections as well as more thrilling rides for the more daring.
