Although Thanksgiving, Christmas and other major holidays may be behind us, that doesn’t mean that we have to wait almost another year to plan some festivities. In fact, travel nursing allows you to experience the “other” holidays throughout the year in fun and unique ways.

Did anyone celebrate Mardi Gras in New Orleans this year? Or are you planning to be in Boston for St Patrick’s Day, or visit actual war memorials on Veterans Day? Well, with travel nursing this is not just a dream or a weekend vacation. This is a lifestyle that makes such things possible.

When I was growing up in Iowa, we learned about some of the “other” holidays in school and what they meant, but it didn’t go much further than that. But when I started working as a travel nurse, I soon realized that there was a whole other world to celebrating holidays. Each holiday has its own local traditions and special activities depending on where you are in the country. And the more you travel, the more you learn about cultural diversity, regional traditions and all the holiday possibilities.

So, do you need to travel for 13 weeks to Boston just to grab a pint during March? Well, my answer is, yes you do! Of course it’s just an example among dozens of places travel nurses can experience holiday traditions--and I imagine you can think of some I’ve never even heard of. The bottom line is that travel nursing allows you to experience things that few people can.

Enjoying regional traditions in person is just one perk of being a travel nurse

Travel nursing has taught me to appreciate the different things in life. It allowed me to experience new lifestyles, foods and living situations; most of all, it pushed me out of my “norm.” I credit travel nursing with forming me into the person I am today, and I believe it will allow you to really find out who you are, as well.

So, get out there and experience the green river during Chicago’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration, Cinco de Mayo in Southern California or another southwestern state, or Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest on Coney Island over the Fourth of July. These adventures and more are waiting.

And wherever you go in travel nursing, don’t forget to seek out the locals’ advice, experience everything you can during your assignment, and most of all have fun in this amazing career choice!
