Professional goals for nurses are important regardless of the time of year or season of career you're in. Nursing objectives keep you moving forward with your career, but when you work on the right goals, you can become a better RN and enjoy your life more.

4 Nursing Goals for 2019

Professional nursing goals often take pay, career status or location of job into account. But well-rounded nursing goals can help you take steps forward in your nursing career while also avoiding nurse burnout in 2019. Check out these examples and consider making one of them your own nursing objective for 2019.

1. Take a step up in your career in 2019

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, RNs throughout the United States make a median salary of $70,000 a year and have access to a plentiful job supply. But nurses with bachelor's or masters degrees can often make more money and access new career paths, including nurse leadership and education or work in specialty niches.

Nurse midwives, for example, make an average of $102,390 annually, and that's just one direction you can go if you make your 2019 nursing goals to get more education.

2. Learn the ropes in a brand new city

When it comes to professional goals for nurses, you may not realize travel can be one of them. But travel nursing jobs are available across the nation and are especially possible for RNs with compact licenses. Choose a city or area you'd like to explore, and make it happen with a new travel position in 2019.

3. Educate more patients about their own healthcare goals

Christine Pereira, RN, is a family nurse practitioner with a goal to educate individuals moving toward retirement to protect their health. "Through my health and wellness blog, Facebook support group and my book, my focus in 2019 is assisting others to regain their health," says Pereira. Whether your 2019 professional goals for nurses include starting your own company or carrying on with a hospital job, striving to provide even more excellent patient care, education or advocacy is always a great nursing objective.

4. Take better care of your own health

While you're working to care for patients, don't forget to put time in during 2019 to care for yourself. Nurses who aren't healthy themselves have a harder time providing for patients, so make 2019 the year you devote to self care.

Whatever you decide to make your focus in 2019, know that having professional goals for nurses is important. They mean the difference between staying in the same position year after year or moving forward with your career and the rest of your life.
