Qualifications/Skills of a CVOR Nurse

CVOR nurse skill set

Most CVOR nursing jobs can be obtained after getting a bachelor’s of science degree in nursing, passing the NCLEX and then getting a state RN license. Some employers will accept an associate’s degree in lieu of a bachelor’s when filling their CVOR nurse job openings.

From there, some CVOR nursing jobs will require previous experience, while others will allow a CVOR nurse to gain clinical experience on the job. The majority of CVOR nurse jobs will require some experience, and usually, they prefer operating room experience.

Cardiovascular Operating Room Nurse certification and credentialing

Two of the basic certifications for CVOR nurses are:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

Depending on your own experience level, you might even be interested in taking the American Heart Association’s ACLS for Experienced Providers, which builds upon the ACLS program.

Many perioperative nurses pursue a Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) credential, which can be obtained from the Competency & Credentialing Institute. According to the CCI, “The CNOR certification program is for perioperative nurses interested in improving and validating their knowledge and skills and providing the highest quality care to their patients.” In other words, you are showing prospective employers and patients that you are completely committed to upholding the highest patient safety standards.

As a CVOR nurse, you might find benefit from joining a professional organization like the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN), which includes the CVOR specialty and includes resources for preparation for the CNOR exam.
